Image optimization for WordPress blogs (quality without slow pages)
12/12/2025 · 1 min read
Images improve readability and trust, but they can also be the biggest reason a page feels slow.
Start with the right dimensions
Don’t upload huge images “just in case.”
- Use the maximum size you actually display.
- Prefer responsive sizes when possible.
Use modern formats when appropriate
- WebP is often smaller than JPEG/PNG.
- Keep PNG for images that truly need transparency.
Compress before upload
Compression usually has a bigger impact than any plugin.
A simple rule:
- photographs: moderate compression
- screenshots: optimize carefully to keep text readable
Avoid layout shift
Layout shift happens when the page loads and elements move.
- Reserve space for images.
- Don’t insert large images above the fold without planning.
Don’t overdo it
Your job is to be clear, not cinematic. A few helpful images beat dozens of decorative ones.
Fast pages feel trustworthy, and that helps every part of your blog—SEO, engagement, and monetization.
